Shure Artists: Common

artist_common_588px

Sometimes described as 'the thinking man's rapper' Common has always provided an alternative to the gangsta fare of contemporaries like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. With space-age effects, old-school beats, jazz- and funk-influenced rhythms and lyrics that often come off like spoken-word poetry, he helped kick off an underground hip-hop movement that would rapidly gain steam.

His first major label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. Its popularity was matched by 2005's Be, which topped Billboard's Hip-Hop Chart and reached Number Two on the Pop Chart. 'Be' sold 800,000 copies and was nominated for four 2006 Grammys. The Kanye West-produced Finding Forever, Common's 2007 album, debuted at Number One on the Billboard pop chart.

Common has also initiated a burgeoning acting career, starring significant roles in such films as Smokin' Aces, Street Kings, American Gangster, Wanted, and Terminator Salvation.
